Montes Alpha Chardonnay 2016 - Casablanca Valley, Chile, $19.99
For Chardonnay Lovers - this is a nice, flavorful Chardonnay reminiscent of a "Napa" style for only $20.00
The Casablanca Valley is on the western edge of Chile's land mass, closer to the Pacific coastline, where it gets morning fogs rolling in from the ocean to cool down the mediterranean environment. Chardonnay is an early - budding varietal, preferring a cooler climate.
Aromas on this include lemon meringue, white blossom, pineapple, mango, ripe yellow apple, pear, apricots. Medium acidity keeps it 'fresh', and the body and alcohol I found both to be at Medium +. There is really good intensity on the nose in this Chard.
Finish: Medium + in length, with tangerine, lemon meringue, ripe yellow apple and caramel notes. This is a very good wine with complexity in aromas and flavors and a pleasing finish. Plus, a great buy at $19.99!
Max Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2015 - Errazuriz Winery, Aconcagua Valley, Chile. $16.99
This wine is from a producer recognized as "the single top quality producer in Chile," Errazuriz, founded in 1870, and today the 6th generation of the family is running the estate. Aconcagua Valley is about 100 km north of Santiago, the capital city.
The label says, "Costa" and that is a relatively new, voluntary designation indicating the precise area in which the grapes are grown to help consumers potentially better understand the style of the bottle's contents. Costa refers to 'coast' - a region receiving cooling influences from the Pacific Ocean's fogs and Humboldt Current breezes.
Aromas of red plum, black cherry, wet stones, red cherry, clove, leather, and a little hint of herbaceousness. This is not a Napa Valley Cabernet - the style is a bit more restrained, and lighter, but the fruits are wonderfully fresh and the tannins are smooth. Acidity is medium, and the alcohol is medium/high.
The finish is medium + with fruits and an exhibition of chocolate...together with very pleasant, ripe tannins.
